Where and how are my tasks saved?

All tasks, both user and application defined, are saved in the user's Documents folder at <user name>/Documents/KosmicTask.

Task types
User defined tasks are saved in the User Tasks subfolder. Application tasks are saved in the Application Tasks subfolder.
File format
All tasks are saved as XML data with a KosmicTask file extension.
File name
Each task is saved using a unique identifier as its file name. This prevents task name collisions. The task ID can be viewed in KosmicTask - select a task and click the info button in the task panel.

Why can't I edit the application tasks?

Application tasks are provided as templates on which to build further tasks.

The primary reason why they cannot be edited is that when the application itself gets updated the application tasks in <user name>/Documents/KosmicTask/Application Tasks also get updated. Any edits made by the user would then be overwritten.

Why happens if I delete the KosmicTask folder?

If you delete the folder at <user name>/Documents/KosmicTask then all tasks, both user defined and application defined, will be deleted.

The deleted folder will be recreated the next time that KosmicTask is run. The Application Tasks sub folder will be recreated and repopulated with the default application task set (these are copied from the application bundle).

Can I view a task using the Finder?

Yes. KosmicTask files support Quick Look.

To view the contents of a KosmicTask file:

  1. Using the Finder navigate to <user name>/Documents/KosmicTask.
  2. Select the User Tasks or Application Tasks sub folder.
  3. Select the Task ID.
  4. Tap spacebar (or Cmd-Y). Alternatively click the Quick Look icon in Finder toolbar.

Can I search for a task using Spotlight?

Yes. KosmicTask files support Spotlight.

You can search the contents of KosmicTask files using the normal Spotlight search facility. KosmicTask also uses Spotlight internally to provide both local and remote search matches.

How does KosmicTask licensing work?

An instance of KosmicTask manages the number of connections that it will accept in the following way:

Installed Licences
Each instance of KosmicTask must have one or more licences installed. Trial versions of the application include a trial licence.
Connections
Each licence defines the maximum number of simultaneous connections that an instance of KosmicTask can support.
Licence Files
Licences are distributed in licence files. The licence file defines the number of supported connections.
Example
If you have 5 copies of KosmicTask installed then in order for them to accept task requests from each other you will require a 5 user licence file.
Adding Licences
In the above example, if 3 more KosmicTask installations are required then an additional 3 user licence file will be required.

KosmicTask licence files are additive. This means that for all 8 machines to communicate each must have a total of 8 licences installed. This can be achieved by ensuring that all 8 machines have both the original 5 user licence and the new 3 user licence installed.

Regardless of the licence status you will always be able to see and browse the public content of all connected instances of KosmicTask. If, however, the licensed connection count has been exceeded you will not be able to execute any tasks on that connection.
